Vaillant Boiler Fault Codes Explained: Spares Guide

If your Vaillant boiler has flashed up an F-code or E-code on its display, it's trying to tell you something specific. Vaillant's ecoTEC and turboMAX ranges use a standardised fault code system, and knowing what a code means — and which spare part usually causes it — can save an engineer a wasted trip and save a homeowner an unnecessary call-out. Why Vaillant Uses Fault Codes

Every Vaillant boiler built in the last couple of decades has an internal diagnostic system. When a sensor reading falls outside its expected range, or a safety device trips, the printed circuit board (PCB) locks the boiler out and displays a code on the screen. A code beginning with F is usually a transient fault the boiler will attempt to reset from automatically; a code beginning with E generally means the fault has persisted and the boiler needs manual intervention or a part replaced.

Common Vaillant Fault Codes and What They Usually Mean

F.28 – Failure to Ignite

The boiler has tried to light but hasn't detected a flame within its safety window. Common causes include a faulty ignition electrode, a dirty or worn flame sensing electrode, low gas pressure, or a fault on the gas valve. Always check gas supply first, then the electrode assembly.

F.29 – Loss of Flame During Operation

The boiler ignited successfully but the flame was lost mid-cycle. This is often down to a faulty flame sensor, poor electrical earthing, or a failing PCB. It can also point to condensate blockage affecting combustion.

F.22 – Low Water Pressure

The pressure sensor has detected the system has dropped below the safe minimum, usually around 0.8 bar. Repressurising via the filling loop resolves most cases — but if the boiler keeps losing pressure, it's worth checking for a slow leak, a failing expansion vessel, or a worn pressure relief valve.

F.75 – No Pressure Rise Detected

The boiler expects to see a pressure change when the pump starts and hasn't. This is frequently a failing pump, an airlock, or a faulty pressure sensor rather than an actual water pressure problem.

F.32 / F.61 – Fan or Gas Valve Faults

These point to the fan running outside its expected speed range, or an issue with the gas valve itself. A blocked flue, a failing fan assembly, or a worn gas valve are the usual suspects.

Which Spares to Check First

Before assuming the worst, most Vaillant fault codes trace back to a handful of common wear parts:

  • Ignition and flame sensing electrodes
  • Pressure sensors and pressure relief valves
  • Circulation pumps
  • Fans and air pressure switches

Reading a fault code and understanding roughly what it points to is something any homeowner can do — and it's genuinely useful for describing the problem accurately when you call an engineer out. But by law, only a Gas Safe registered engineer can open the casing, work on the gas train, or replace parts on a gas boiler. Repressurising the system via the external filling loop is normally fine for a homeowner to do themselves; anything beyond that should be left to a qualified engineer.
