5 Simple Heating & Plumbing Maintenance Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Keeping your heating and plumbing systems in good shape doesn't have to mean calling in a professional for every little thing. Here are five simple checks and habits that can save you money, prevent breakdowns, and extend the life of your system.

1. Bleed your radiators regularly

If your radiators are warm at the bottom but cold at the top, there's likely trapped air inside. Bleeding them once or twice a year — especially at the start of the heating season — helps your system run more efficiently and heat your home evenly.

2. Check your boiler pressure

Most boilers run best between 1 and 1.5 bar of pressure. If the gauge is reading low, you may have a leak or need to top up via the filling loop. Consistently low pressure is worth investigating before it becomes a bigger issue.

3. Insulate exposed pipework

Pipes in lofts, garages, and other unheated spaces are vulnerable to freezing in winter. A bit of pipe lagging is inexpensive and can prevent costly burst pipes and water damage.

4. Don't ignore small drips

A slow drip from a tap or valve might seem minor, but over time it wastes water and can be a sign of a worn washer or seal. Catching it early is usually a quick, low-cost fix.

5. Service your boiler annually

An annual service keeps your boiler running efficiently, catches wear and tear before it becomes a breakdown, and keeps any warranty valid. It's one of the best investments you can make in your home's heating system.
